ANNUAL REPORT FY22
OUR MISSION
Advance the rights of under-represented individuals and families in our diverse community through legal services, strategic advocacy, and educational outreach
OUR VISION
To achieve social justice in Silicon Valley and beyond through vigorous legal advocacy
Everyone in Silicon Valley should be a part of our success story.
This Law Foundation Annual Report will share stories of our clients—and our many partners and supporters who make the work of the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley possible. The remarkable impact we have in reaching 10,000 individuals and families each year is because of you.
As the region’s largest legal nonprofit, we work determinedly to address social injustices like poverty, discrimination, and child abuse. Our free legal services, education programs, and advocacy are deeply woven into the communities we serve.
Working and living in one of the most innovative and thriving places on earth, we have been blessed by opportunities and advantages. But these advantages are not shared equitably.
Our attorneys, social workers, and advocates provide quality legal services to level the playing field. Together we are keeping people in housing by fighting evictions and securing a fair return of security deposits. Those struggling with mental health issues receive representation and knowledge of their rights in advocating for care. Children, including foster children, suffering in unstable home or school environments have an advocate for their most critical needs.
Your support provides meaningful access to justice for those who need legal advocacy and representation but cannot afford it. These successes are our shared successes.
Whatever the future may hold, the Law Foundation remains committed to serving our neighbors. We remain focused on social justice and equity for all. We continue to adapt our programs and methods of service to meet emerging needs.
Thank you for walking this path with us to advance the rights of those who are under-represented.

CHILDREN & YOUTH
Your support advances the legal rights of children and youth, empowering them to lead healthy and productive lives. We provide free legal assistance and advocacy to support children and youth in the foster care system, who need probate guardianship, are facing education challenges like expulsion, and so much more.
Safety and Racial Equity in Our Schools
Police presence in schools disproportionately impacts students of color and students with disabilities. The Law Foundation joined advocates from the San José Unified Equity Coalition to end police presence across the San José Unified School District and create a safer school environment for every student.
HOUSING
Every day those struggling due to the regional housing affordability crisis receive free help and advocacy. Low-income families and individuals receive caring and competent representation when navigating issues like unfair evictions, housing discrimination, or applying for rental subsidies and assistance.
Amid the Silicon Valley Housing Crisis, Stable RV Living in Mountain View Remains
Throughout Silicon Valley, many local governments penalize unhoused people or families and individuals with non-traditional homes, such as those living in RVs. We successfully fought against one of these measures in the city of Mountain View.
HEALTH
Those living with health and mental health issues can receive free legal advice and representation. This includes helping disabled individuals to receive the public benefits they are entitled to, providing legal help to those experiencing homelessness, and advocating for the rights of those experiencing acute mental health crises.
Advocating for the Health and Well-Being of Unhoused People
Our team continues to advocate for people living without shelter throughout Silicon Valley. Staff regularly visit encampments in San Jose and advise residents about their legal rights and options. In early May 2022, the San Jose City Council discussed the City's encampment management plan and the planned sweeps of Guadalupe River Park. Law Foundation attorneys submitted an advocacy letter in advance of the meeting.
PRO BONO
The Law Foundation’s Pro Bono Program leverages the talent of attorneys and staff from law firms and corporate legal departments to help more clients than we would with just our in-house attorneys. Our pro bono attorney volunteers dedicate their time and expertise to provide high-quality legal services. Our non-attorney pro bono volunteers also provide a wide variety of services to Law Foundation attorneys in areas like paralegal support, website and graphic design, forensics, and data analysis.
RACE EQUITY
As a social justice organization, the Law Foundation is committed to increasing access to justice for low-income families and communities of color. As lawyers and legal advocates, we understand that laws are not colorblind. Race equity is at the core of the Law Foundation’s vision to eradicate racial disparities and the systems that perpetuate them. And we must hold ourselves accountable to ensuring that the Law Foundation’s staff reflects the community we serve, that our systems change work is done in coalition with community members, and that our work is rooted in racial justice and equity.
